Identity
Identity, or visual identity, refers to the combined visual representation of an organization or company. We often think of the design of logos when discussing identity. That's only the beginning of the story.
Visual identity is constructed of the repeated use of logo, colors, typefaces, etc. to build an image (hopefully positive) of the organization in the public's eye and to inspire trust in the products and services offered. So, in addition to the consistent use of the logo, typography and colors, the design of uniforms, office buildings and interiors, trucks and other means of delivery, packaging, etc. all combine to influence public opinion and are therefore part of visual identity.
Branding
Branding is a term most often used by the advertising and marketing industries, which takes the firm's visual identity and actively promotes it, often by use of a corporate spokesperson (even an animated one). It goes beyond the purely visual to the actively promotional realm.
In addition, the term branding may be applied to specific products of a company, as well as to the organization itself, and even to individuals in the public spotlight. Brand management is a term normally applied to each product or product line a company makes. The brand manager is responsible for the brand's performance and may use tools such as advertising, direct marketing, public relations, product placement, sponsorship, etc. to reach the goals set out for the brand.
